“Okay then. Well thank you for coming sweetheart.” She said.

“Anytime. As long as you’re doing the cooking I’ll be here.” Darrell said patting his stomach.

She smiled and took him by the hand.

“You’re always welcome here you understand me?” She asked.

He nodded and smiled.

“Alright if you need something, don’t be afraid to help yourself.” She said turning to walk away.

“Yes ma’am.” He said.

She winked at her son and walked away. Teddy watched his Mother walk away and once again realized in his family black don’t crack. She was a 64-year-old woman who still looked to be in her early 40’s. She had a few gray hairs trying to sprout but her beautician kept her locks fly with the color she rocked. Mrs. Bishop was the definition of what aging gracefully is.

“Ya Mama still got it goin’ on man.” Darrell said.

“Yeah I know. She makes me look forward to gettin’ old cuz I’m still gon’ be sexy.” Teddy said.

“Oh yeah she bad as hell. If I was a few years older, I’d holla early.” Darrell said sipping his soda.

“Yeah so would everybody else.” Teddy said.

“Your Pops looks like he looked just like you back in the day.” Darrell said.

“He looked more like Jalen. Everybody thinks they’re twins.” He said.

“How old is your Father?” Darrell asked.

“If you ask him he’ll say 46, but he’s 68.” Teddy said.

“68?! That man over there on the grill is 68?” he asked.

“68.” Teddy said.

“Damn man you better get used to looking like that for a long time.” Darrell said.

“Oh mos def. Black don’t crack in this family.” He said.

Teddy’s younger sister Sonya came over to them smiling.

“Hey guys.” she said.

“Wassup Sunny?” Teddy said.

Sunny was a nickname he gave her as a child.

“Did Mommy tell you?” She asked.

“Tell me what?” He asked.

She showed him the ring on her finger.

“Shawn proposed to me.” She said.

“He did? When?” Teddy asked.

“Last night.” She said.

“Congratulations baby!” Teddy said leaping up to hug her.

“Thank you.” She said smiling.

“Where is he?” He asked.

“He’s coming later. He had to work.” She said.

“Oh aight. My man Shawn, y’all set a date?” He asked.

“Not yet. I don’t even think we’re gonna have a big wedding, we may just go to the justice of the peace.” She said.

“Why not?” He asked.

“Shawn doesn’t want a big wedding. He just wants us to be married.” She said.

“Okay well let me know when. And if he changes his mind y’all know y’all can come have it at La Casa.” He said.

“We can?” She asked.

“Of course.” He said.

“That would be great.” She said.

“As a matter of fact, y’all can have it where ever y’all want. I’ll pay for everything and you can fly out as many people as you want.” He said.

“Oh Teddy thank you. I’ll see what he says. Between us, this is why he doesn’t wanna have the big wedding because he doesn’t think we can afford it. But it doesn’t have to be a big huge affair, just close family and some friends. About 40 people.” She said.

“No problem just let me know when you wanna do it.
